What are the long-term benefits of STAIRRS ?

The output of the project will influence directly or indirectly :

• The development of a Railway Noise Strategy Support System as a management tool, potentially applicable to other modes of transport and for other emissions (air pollution, vibration).
• A classification system for defining the noise characteristics of different vehicle and track designs.
• The development of validated diagnostic methods to separate the contributions of vehicle and track to total noise. This fulfils not only a scientific objective but is also an essential element of identifying the major noise sources and hence where noise mitigation should be applied for it to be effective.
• Standardisation of type testing procedures being developed by ISO/CEN.
